CUMBIA!!!!!!!

Cumbia is a native music style from Colombia it contains elements from the African and Native American styles. It utilizes a basic Native American back beat with african and indian drums as well as flutes and other istruments. As the music style evolved other elements such as synthesizers, accordions and electric guitar have become dominant as well as a direction towards pop stylings and lyrics. Originaly the lyrics spoke against imperialism slavery and other social ills.

Wiki -

"Cumbia is a variant of Guinean cumbé music. Cumbia started in the Caribbean coast of what is now Colombia and Panama, mainly in or around Cartagena during the period of Spanish colonization. Spain used its ports to import African slaves, who tried to preserve their musical traditions and also turned the drumming and dances into a courtship ritual. Cumbia was mainly performed with just drums and claves.

The slaves were later influenced by the sounds of Amerindian instruments from the Kogui and Kuna tribes, who lived between the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Montes de María in Colombia and Kuna Yala in Panama. . Millo flutes, Gaita flutes, and güiros were instruments borrowed from these Native American tribes. The interaction between Africans and Amerindians under the Spanish caste system created a mixture from which the gaitero (cumbia interpreter) appeared, with a defined identity by the 1800s. (These gaiteros are not the same as the Venezuelan Zulian gaiteros.) The European guitars and accordions were added later through Spanish influence."<center>

MIGRAPUNX

Migrapunx means Immigrant Punks it was coined by the New York band Huasipungo to describe a little community of bands in the United states that had many things in common speaking and performing in other languages being from third world countries, being "Illegal Aliens" and migrating to the United States.

The idea is that being an immigrant or the child of immigrants is an important point of view and that the immigrant experience is a way of life it's a culture that brings many "Punx of color" together. The focus isn't on color or being "minorities" but sharing a culture, bands like Say Bok Gwai a Cantonese language grind thrash band feel a kinship with La Grita a band with Spanish lyrics with members from Mexico the Philippines and Honduras.

There is much more that makes a Migrapunk band though, there is a social and culturally conscious mentality that many if not all the bands share.
